Why meeting someone online isn’t weird at all:
- Our generation grew up with technology and the internet
- Since we all grew up with technology, we know all about internet safety.
- If you’re going to meet in person, you’re going to sure as hell confirm their identity before you do so because you’re not an idiot.
- We aren’t naive enough to believe out of billions of people on the planet, our soulmate or even best friend is going to live next door.
- Joining blogging communities involves socialization
- Gaming online with thousands of people? You’re bound to click with someone
- Everyone is connected through the interwebs
- It’s easier to find someone you relate to online compared to in person
- Not everyone is trying to catfish or abduct you
1. We know some things about internet safety, but not all of us use the internet safely, partially from ignorance and partially because the internet is still a relatively new realm we haven’t figured everything out about
2. Not all people confirm others identities, identities can be “confirmed” through complex lies, and some people are very dumb about this or don’t know any better
3. Believing your soulmate or best friend lives near you isn’t at all naive since that’s what happens for most people
4. Socialization through the internet is very different from socializing in person and probably shouldn’t even be compared
5. It’s very easy to fake emotions or act like an entirely different person online, look at Instagram stars that have created a persona that attracts mass followings and people that believe they genuinely know this person rather than a fraction of their life
6. Everyone should still be wary and I would personally recommend emphasizing in person relationships over online ones
